Latin text ex-library Italian Jesuit Robert Bellarmine, SJ, also known as Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino (born in 1542 and died in 1621), was a cardinal in the Catholic Church. In 1930, he became a saint and was one of only 37 people to be recognized a Doctor of the Church. Among the key players in the Counter-Reformation was him. After serving as the Roman College's rector and a theology professor, Bellarmine was appointed Archbishop of Capua in 1602. He was in favor of the Council of Trent's reform directives. His involvement in the Giordano Bruno affair, the Galileo affair, and the trial of Friar Fulgenzio Manfredi are also well-remembered. On Paul V's orders, Bellarmine called Galileo in 1616, informed him of an upcoming Congregation of the Index decree that would reject the Copernican theory of the Sun's immobility and the Earth's movement, and commanded him to give it up. Galileo gave his consent.
