Pedro Mejía, sometimes known as Pero Mexía in older Spanish, was a Spanish Renaissance writer, historian, and humanist who lived from 1497 to 1551. Born and raised in Seville, where he spent most of his childhood, his writings are always imbued with a particular fondness. He attended the universities of Salamanca and Seville to study law and humanities. He corresponded with Juan Gines de Sepulveda, Luis Vives, and Erasmus of Rotterdam. He was named official chronicler of Emperor Charles V's court in 1548. Silva de varia lección, or A Miscellany of Several Lessons, is his most famous work and a European best seller from the beginning. It is an encyclopedic miscellany or combination of topics that span the wide range of humanistic knowledge available at the time. Pliny the Elder's Natural History is the primary source of material used in the work, but it also draws from the Attic Nights by Aulus Gellius, the Banquet of the Sophists by Athenaeus, the Saturnalia of Macrobius, the Memorable deeds and sayings of Valerius Maximus, the Inventor of all things by Polidoro Virgilio, the Moralia and Parallel Lives of Plutarch, and more. It also includes writings by Rotterdam native Erasmus. To name a few writers he impacted, this miscellany can be found in the writings of Shakespeare, Montaigne, Miguel de Cervantes, and Mateo Alemán. Pedro Mexia was one of the first Renaissance scientists to write for a general readership. He covered a wide range of topics in astronomy, cooking, and medicine in this work. Magellan's first circumnavigation of the planet is also described by him; Mexia personally saw Magellan's fleet depart Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1519 and return in 1522.
