Description: Excellent huge early 20th-century oil on canvas portrait by John R. Koopman depicting a gentleman, possibly Sherlock Holmes, smoking next to a spaniel at night on a hillside. A low full moon on the horizon and a gentleman lighting his pipe make for an excellent dramatic large-scale image. Koopman's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, probably a scene from The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place, was purchased by its former owner from a UK fine art dealer. Consequently, a specialist in fine art has also usually recognized Holmes. signed lower left, in excellent original condition, with a gold frame. Dimensions: framed at 44" x 35.5"
