Year: 19th century
Size: 34" x 26"
Medium: Oil
Description: Large 19th-century oil painting on canvas that is credited to Thomas Luny, depicting Santisima Trinidad prior to her capture at the Battle of Trafalgar. The last combat of the Spanish first-rate ship of the line before it was seized by the British ship HMS Neptune is described in this excellent and significant historical account. In the annals of the Age of Sail, Santisima Trinidad was the most heavily armed vessel with the greatest number of guns. Though essentially identical to Luny's historical naval paintings, the work is unsigned. Given that Luny would only sign one, it is most likely a pair, with this being the companion piece. In its original frame and in good condition considering its age. Size: approximately 34" by 26" when framed.
