Following the Revolution of 1688, he gained notoriety by advancing to the rank of serjeant-at-law, justice of the Court of Common Pleas, and knighthood in 1689. With "but few of the cases censured," Ventris' compilation of reports, which spans cases from 1668 to 1691, has "generally been considered to be of good authority" and "endures as among the most important written during the Restoration."
