Half leather on top of gilded fabric jewel-encrusted slipcase Dimensions: 7 1/2 by 10 1/3"; English text; PERFECT CONDITION Italian Renaissance painter and architect Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) is best known for his work The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, which is still widely cited in contemporary biographies of the many Italian Renaissance artists he covers, such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. However, it is now recognized that Vasari included many factual errors, particularly when covering artists who were alive when he wrote the book. Italian Renaissance painter and architect Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) is best known for his work The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, which is still widely cited in contemporary biographies of the many Italian Renaissance artists he covers, such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. However, it is now recognized that Vasari included many factual errors, particularly when covering artists who were alive when he wrote the book. The Tomb of Michelangelo, his idol, in the 1578-completed Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, was planned by Vasari. In his Histoire de France, author Jules Michelet proposed adopting Vasari's concept of a rinascita (rebirth) based on his writing in print about Giotto's new painting technique. Michelet used the name Renaissance (rebirth, in French) to distinguish the cultural shift. After then, the phrase was embraced in history and remains in use to this day.
