Description: Fine oil on canvas representation of the stoning of St. Stephen by a French Old Master from the 17th century. Excellent and uncommon early representation of the saint regarded as the first Christian martyr or protomartyr. This image shows St. Stephen just before he was stoned to death by Jewish officials (to the left) who had accused him of blasphemy for preaching Christianity. Young Saul of Tarsus, who would eventually become Paul the Apostle (St. Paul), can be seen to the right watching the martyrdom. Dimensions: around 17.5" x 15.5" when framed.
