Description: Fine 17th century French Old Master depiction of the stoning of St Stephen, oil on canvas. Excellent and rare early depiction of the the saint considered to be be the Protomartyr or first Martyr of Christianity. Here St Stephen is depicted the moment before his death by stoning after the Jewish authorities (to the left) charged him with blasphemy for teaching Christianity. To the right a young Saul of Tarsus witness the martyrdom, Saul would later become Paul the Apostle (St Paul).
