Roman fabulist Gaius Julius Phaedrus was the first to translate a number of Aesop's fables into Latin in the first century CE. There is little concrete information available about him, and in late antiquity, his contributions were hardly acknowledged. His significance as an author and for the fables' transmission did not become apparent until the discovery of a few flawed copies during and after the Renaissance.
