Year: 19th century
Size: 58" x 38"
Medium: Oil
Description: Oil on canvas, large image from the 19th century of The Queen's Ships off Dover, around 1588. It accurately depicts the historical narrative of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham's Lord Howard of Effingahms sailing toward Philip II's Spanish Armada as it prepared to invade Britain. Francis Drake served as their second-in-command. Dixon, a prolific full-time painter, is a leading example of his work in excellent quality and condition. It is displayed in its original, old gilded frame. Given the technical similarities between the gift it was given in 1935 and the artist's shown work, the title "unfinished" was presumably an error. Dimensions: 58" x 38" framed approximately
