Written in English Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre wrote the novel Paul et Virginie, which is also known as Paul and Virginia in English. It was first published in 1788. The titular characters of the book are lifelong friends who fall in love. The narrative takes place in Mauritius, which was formerly known as Île de France and was ruled by France. The novel, which was written on the verge of the French Revolution, is regarded as Bernardin's best creation. It depicts the destiny of a natural child tainted by the fabricated emotion of the higher classes in France in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Having spent some time on the island, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre drew inspiration for portions of the story from a shipwreck he saw there.
