Description: The title of this historical chronicle is "Historical chronicle or description of the strangest story so itself from beginning of the world... until 1659." by Gottfried Johann Ludwig two books A facsimile of Frankfurt, Hutter, between 1743 and 17441979; Stuttgart: Fackelverlag Massive folio, fully illustrated, 8.5 by 13.5", with yellow leather bindings. Written in German Outstanding interior with light binding wear. One of the most read historical books of the early modern era was written by German theologian, translator, and author Johann Ludwig Gottfried. He was raised in Amberg, attended Heidelberg to study religion, and shortly after, an Oppenheim publisher saw his talent for writing. His Historical Chronicle or Description of the Most Remarkable History, which was first published in 1631, was extremely popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and even inspired Goethe to study it. This is a 1743 edition, which has been revised and enlarged to include more recent historical occurrences. Not only is Gottfried's chronicle of exceptional quality, but his translations, epigrams, collections, and paraphrases are also noteworthy aspects of his work. Matthaus Merian the Elder's 328 copperplate engravings and 156 miniature portraits skillfully embellish the extensive text with realistic cityscapes and dramatic historical scenarios, including the Defenestration of Prague, sieges, land and sea wars, assassinations, executions, and more. While certain engravings, like the maps, fold out, others are double-paged.
