Redesigned and corrected by Francesco Sansovino. Venice; 32 lvs., 518 pages., 1562 Featuring a full page portrait woodcut and the printer's mark in woodcut. Dimensions: 4 x 5 3/4" (14.5 x 10 cm) Crumpled vellum, well-worn Venetian copy of Guicciardini's seminal book, produced by Francesco Sansovino (1512-1586) between 1483 and 1540. In good condition, with few spots with period notes. Written in Italian. Francesco Guicciardini was an Italian statesman and historian who lived from 1483 to 1540. Regarded as a prominent political writer of the Italian Renaissance, he was a friend and critic of Niccolo Machiavelli. With his realistic study of the characters and events of his day and his use of official sources to bolster his claims, Guicciardini's masterwork, The History of Italy, opened the door for a new wave of historiography.
