He is regarded as one of the most influential academics of the northern Renaissance. He was a well-known classical scholar who wrote in pure Latin while serving as a Catholic priest. He was dubbed "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists" and known as the "Prince of the Humanists" by other humanists.
