Description: M. de Fontenelle's Eloges des Academiciens de l'Academie Royale des Sciences Chez Isaac van der Kloot, The Hague, 1731 two books Bound in original calf armorial bindings with gilt-tooled spines in six compartments, measuring 4 1/4 by 6 3/4". Excellent interior quality, with a small amount of leather damage in the middle of the volume. I cover the front. Latin text The work presents the public to fourteen Academy des Sciences members who passed away between 1725 and 1730, such as Nicolas Hartsoeker, Isaac Newton, and Czar Peter. The work, which is the first instance of a popular publication of Fontenelle's eulogies, is a significant representation of what is now considered to be Fontenelle's main achievement: although history has been kind to men like Marsigli and du Verney, it is sometimes forgotten that it is because of works like Fontenelle's that their accomplishments are remembered and acknowledged to this day. Known by his other name, Bernard Le Bouyer de Fontenelle, Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657–1757) was a French author and a prominent member of three Institut de France academies. He is particularly remembered for his approachable explanations of scientific subjects as the Age of Enlightenment developed.
