Description: Ed. P. Burman, PHAEDRUS Fabularum Aesopiarum libri V, Leyden, S. and J. Luchtmans, 1778 Two sections in one volume (58, 398; 258, 72 p.). Frontispiece engraved by MULDER after LIEDEMAN. In excellent condition. Two ties are absent. Together with the award, dated August 2, 1830, to Gerardus Joannes Spruijt, signed and dated by rector G.C. Brillenburg and I.A. Loopuyt. Inside a blindstamped double fillet line border with gilded corner fleurons, the school reward has an armorial binding featuring the gilt coat of arms of SCHIEDAM. Additionally, each compartment has a gilt spine with a central fleuron. Dimensions: 5 1/4 x 8 3/4"; Latin text Roman fabulist Gaius Julius Phaedrus was the first to translate a number of Aesop's fables into Latin in the first century CE. There is little concrete information available about him, and in late antiquity, his contributions were hardly acknowledged. His significance as an author and for the fables' transmission did not become apparent until the discovery of a few flawed copies during and after the Renaissance.
