Half leather, 4 1/2 by 7 1/8" in size In good shape, with some wear. Title page with lower right corner absent Written in French A brief history of the enigmatic Count Alessandro di Cagliostro (1743–1795), who was the pseudonym of mystic Giuseppe Balsamo, unquestionably the most significant occultist in early modern Europe. Cagliostro, who originated in Palermo, Sicily, traveled around Europe while conducting alchemical ceremonies and peddling magical accoutrements. He appears to have been an accomplished letter forger; in his memoirs, Casanova expresses how pleased he was with his abilities. After being accepted as a freemason in London, Cagliostro went on to found many masonic lodges across Europe. He may have even taken part in the notorious Affair of the Diamond Necklace, but he was exonerated following a nine-month incarceration in the Bastille. He led an exciting and contentious existence until, perhaps as a result of his wife reporting him to the Inquisition for heresy, he was ultimately apprehended in Rome in 1789. He was given a life sentence and passed away in prison in 1795.
