The book can be interpreted as both a response to Tobias Smollett's distinctly unsentimental Travels through France and Italy and an epilogue to the apparently unfinished novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Having encountered Smollett on his travels through Europe, Sterne took a deep dislike to his venom, sharpness, and acrimony. He used him as the model for Smelfungus. The second half of the 18th century saw travel writing emerge as the dominant genre, and the novel had enormous popularity and influence.
