Description: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY to FRANCE & ITALY by Mr. YORICK by LAURENCE STERNE London, No date [1792] 2 volumes bound together Size 4 1/4 by 6 3/4" Text in English Full calf with title label on the spine. Very good condition , minor wear, some foxing and burned spot in the lower right corner of title page 166 pages After visiting Naples in southern Italy and traversing across France, Sterne returned with the intention of writing a nostalgic account of his adventures. The book can be interpreted as both a response to Tobias Smollett's distinctly unsentimental Travels through France and Italy and an epilogue to the apparently unfinished novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Having encountered Smollett on his travels through Europe, Sterne took a deep dislike to his venom, sharpness, and acrimony. He used him as the model for Smelfungus. The second half of the 18th century saw travel writing emerge as the dominant genre, and the novel had enormous popularity and influence.
