Description: Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia: Comprising the Paradiso, Purgatorio, and Inferno. Translated into English verse by the Rev. Henry Boyd, A.M., Chaplain to the Right Honourable the Lord Viscount Charleville, with introductions, annotations, and illustrations. published and rinted by A. New Street Square, Strahan; for T. Cadell, W. and Jun. Davies, in London's Strand, 1802. First English publication in three full volumes, featuring an engraved frontispiece of Dante that has considerable foxing. Measures 6 by 9 1/4". 3/4 leather, boards with marble. Five banded spines with a gilded title. Excellent inside quality, with little slight binding wear. Accompanied with front pastedowns and bookplates. Completed in 1320, Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, also known as La Divina Commedia or La Commedia, "is usually held to be one of the world's great works of literature." It "traces the journey of Dante from darkness and error to the revelation of the divine light, culminating in the Beatific Vision of God," and is "(d)ivided into three major sections—Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso." Nearly five centuries after the Italian original from the 14th century, Henry Boyd published the complete translation in 1802. Boyd translated Dante's works into rhymed six-line stanzas for the first complete English translation of La Commedia. Given the strongly Catholic nature of Alighieri's work, it received little notice in the English-speaking Protestant world prior to 1802.
