Description: The Bible text. [Jean Crespin, Lyon], 1529. Folio: 10 by 14" (355 x 250 mm). Gothic type. Text in two columns within rule borders. Red and black title printed on it. A miniature woodcut of St. Jerome appears within a four-part border that depicts the Last Supper, the six days of Creation, God the Father, and two angels in a tympanum. There are 121 small text woodcuts (including twenty-three repetitions): ninety-one Old Testament woodcuts within strip borders and thirty New Testament woodcuts without borders. There is also a large six-part Creation woodcut at the beginning of Genesis, a half-page woodcut of King Solomon at the beginning of Proverbs, and a full-page Nativity woodcut at the beginning of the New Testament. Initials in woodcut decoration. Within a red architectural framework, the Eusebian canons (leaves D1–D3) are printed in red and black. A piece of 18th-century Moroccan calligraphy on calf. There is considerable wear and tear on the binding, some pages have ancient paper repairs, there is a dampstain on the lower margin of the last few pages, and the upper right corner of the first few pages of the book has wormed its way through about 11 leaves to the lower margin. Mortimer French 538, STC 442; Adams V-474.
