Dionysius of Halicarnassus, also known as "Dionysios (son of Alexandros) of Halikarnassos," lived from approximately 60 BC to after 7 BC. He was a prominent Greek historian and rhetorician instructor who thrived under Emperor Augustus. His writing was atticistic, evoking the best aspects of Classical Attic Greek. For centuries, the Greek elite's identity was inextricably linked to Dionysius' belief that paideia, or accurate knowledge of ancient sources, should be promoted in school.
