Latin text. Francesco Guicciardini was an Italian statesman and historian who lived from 1483 to 1540. Regarded as a prominent political writer of the Italian Renaissance, he was a friend and critic of Niccolo Machiavelli. With his realistic study of the characters and events of his day and his use of official sources to bolster his claims, Guicciardini's masterwork, The History of Italy, opened the door for a new wave of historiography.
