Barclaii Argenis, Editio Novissima Cum Clave, Hoc Est Nominum Propriorum Elucidatione hactenus nondum edita. An uncommon piece of Scottish writing. initial calf Excellent interior, slight leather wear; measures 3 by 5 inches. John Barclay was a Scottish poet and writer who lived in the early 17th century (1582–1621). Argenis, the final piece he finished before passing away, is his most significant and well-known creation. Argenis is a political love story that addresses both the royalist dispute in England and the real history of religious strife in France. The theological struggle takes place in France under the reigns of Henry III and Henry IV and makes reference to the Overbury scandal and other English events. The narrative itself is an allegory that was created from a monarch's perspective.
