Excellent inside, with the exception of a small dampstain on the title page Written in French Agronomist Pons Augustin Alletz (1703–1785) was a Frenchman. Prior to practicing law in Montpellier, Alletz lived for a while in a catholic community affiliated with the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. But he gave up practicing law shortly and relocated to Paris to focus only on literature. Almost all of his many writings are helpful reference books. Originally published in two volumes in 1760, Alletz's most well-known work, L'Agronome, ou Dictionnaire portatif du cultivateur ("The Agronomist, or Portable Dictionary of the Farmer") was widely reprinted until the 19th century and was regarded as one of the best guides to country living at the time. In addition to tips on hunting, veterinary care, gardening, and livestock rearing, the handbook includes a ton of useful recipes that would delight even the most discerning rural gourmet. The section on wine and wine-making is important and includes information on wine pairings, wine-related anecdotes, writers of wine-related books, wine varieties, and vinegar recipes.
