Description: [Pere Guillaume Hyacinthe Bougeant] Philosophical entertainment on the language of beasts Gissey, Bordelet, Ganeau, Paris, 1739 first printing Dimensions: 3-1/2 by 6-1/4" 157, [1] pages. original red-stained edges and speckled calf binding Excellent condition, some wear Written in French Bougeant was charged with heresy and imprisoned for his most well-known work, which claimed that devils lived inside animals. His work is defended in the letters. One of the more intriguing of several "philosophical" books from the eighteenth century that supported the then-controversial theory that animals could speak to one another in their own tongue and weren't just motivated by instinct. We may be certain of this truth because to the contributions of numerous contemporary naturalists, including Konrad Lorenz. However, when it was published, it generated a great deal of moral outcry, leading to the author's banishment to La Fleche. "This book, in which he maintains that the demons animate the brutes, is addressed to a woman, and strewn with madrigals which scandalized the devotees, and which did not seem light enough to people of the world." Its author was nevertheless one of the greatest historians of his day in spite of this. HOEFER VI, 907. BARBER I, 156
