Description: Large oil on canvas picture by a 17th-century Old Master of Katherine Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield (1609–1667). A three-quarter length photograph featuring Baron Wootton's daughter, Thomas Wootton, sitting in a cave, adorned in a lavish gold satin gown and clutching a palm leaf. engraved on the reverse. Stanhope gained notoriety at the time for being the mistress of portraitist Van Dyck, a rival and friend of fellow Dutch painter Lely. presented within a wooden and gilded frame. Generally in good shape considering its age, however in some places the canvas sticks out of the frame. Origin: Langdale Chase Hotel; approximate measurements are 55" by 45.5" when framed.
