Measuring 9 1/2 by 11 1/4 " Greek historian Polybius (Polýbios; c. 200–c. 118 BC) lived during the middle Hellenistic era. The Histories, a global history that chronicles the rise of Rome in the Mediterranean in the third and second century BC, is one of his most well-known works. It detailed occurrences in Italy, Iberia, Greece, Macedonia, Syria, Egypt, and Africa between 264 and 146 BC. Among many other events, it described the Punic and Macedonian Wars. In addition to being the only significant Hellenistic historical book to survive, Polybius's Histories is significant for its examination of mixed constitutions and constitutional reform. The founders of the US Constitution, John Locke's Two Treatises of Government, Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws, and Polybius's theories on the separation of powers, checks and balances, and "the people" all drew inspiration from Polybius.
