Description: A Geographical History of Africa, JOANNES LEO AFRICANUS. Written in Italian and Arabic. John Pory translated and compiled. England: Georg. Pastor. First English edition, 1600, very rare Dimensions: 6.5 by 9.5" [8, title and preliminaries], 1-60, 1-420 pages; two portrait engravings separated by tissue guards (supplied from another book of the same period but bound in); woodcut device on title page; later plain green binding with gilt spine lettering; folded map missing, otherwise in very good condition. The first book about Africa written by an African, published in English for the first time. Granada-born Johannes Leo Africanus, whose true name was Hasan ben Mohamed Alfasi, was a diplomat and geographer. After seeing every Muslim nation in Africa, Muhammad was taken prisoner by Christian pirates in 1517, who brought him and the travel journal to Rome. There he translated his text into Latin for publication under Pope Leo X's patronage.
