The first book about Africa written by an African, published in English for the first time. Granada-born Johannes Leo Africanus, whose true name was Hasan ben Mohamed Alfasi, was a diplomat and geographer. After seeing every Muslim nation in Africa, Muhammad was taken prisoner by Christian pirates in 1517, who brought him and the travel journal to Rome. There he translated his text into Latin for publication under Pope Leo X's patronage.
