Description: THE HOLY BIBLE (NT title dated 1666; Cambridge: John Field, 1668). Dimensions: 9.75" x 6.75". This copy, if complete, is bound without apocrypha. Additionally bound with The Whole Book of Psalms (complete, Cambridge, Field, 1666) in exquisite straight-grained leather, featuring marbled endpapers, boards with engraved silver corner pieces, and central pieces with a monogram ("EAB"? ); Elizabeth Brand's name in gold pen on the title upper margin, dated 1719. Known as the "Preaching Bible" because of its simplicity of use in the pulpit, the engraved title is accentuated in red ink, and the text is ruled in red ink throughout. This Bible is substantially thinner than most because of the small print utilized. The current Bible exhibits minimal signs of wear, which, combined with the exquisite binding, implies that it was carefully preserved as a valuable artifact and was not used much for reading. This Bible was acquired by bookseller Thomas Jordan Hookham's store in 1800; his little bookseller's label, which reads "No. 100, New Bond Street," is located on the front pastedown (upper corner). Extremely good condition.
