Description: Sebastian Munster (1489–1552). Cosmogravia, also known as the description of all countries, regions, and distant spots on Earth's surface, is what is meant by the term "cosmography." Sebastian Henricpetri, Basel, 1598. Contains around 69 double-page views, maps, and plans, many enclosed by beautiful woodcut borders, and 26 double-page pretext maps. Large gothic initials, woodcut headpieces, and the printer's device at the conclusion are among the 1250 woodcuts throughout the text. Title printed in black and red with the author's woodcut portrait.Reprinted in a second edition with updated woodcut map inventory. Sebastian Henricpetri, the son of Heinrich Petri, Münster's first printer and son-in-law, was forced to commission a fresh set of woodblocks depicting the maps and views that adorned Münster's enduringly admired world survey and chronicle during the 1580s. These were included in the 1588 edition and later ones. The modern world map and the map of the Americas (Burden 58), both copied after Ortelius' 1570 maps by an unidentified engraver, give a far more accurate though still not up-to-date depiction of the Americas than the primitive maps used in the 1544-1578 editions, despite the fact that most differ little from their models. Burmeister 83; Alden & Landis 598/73; Sabin 51395. Thickness: 5 3/4" Original blind-embossed pigskin binding with one (of two) clasps over wooden boards Along with the two world maps, there are numerous views of Augsburg, Besancon, Bordeaux, Chur, Cusco, Florence, Jerusalem, Cologne, Koblenz, Cairo, Constantinople, London, Rome, Venice, and Wurzburg. There are also maps of America, Asia, Africa, Europe, the European and German-speaking countries, the Rhine course in three sheets, and more. Part of the folding panorama of Heidelberg and Vienna is absent. A few pages have minor damage, some are reinforced with manuscript waste, the title is mounted, there is some fading and wear, and a few tiny tears have been taped up with archival tape.
